Top 5 Mistakes That YOU Could Be Making When Applying Product to Your Wooden Surface

If you have applied your oil, but not achieved the desired results, this could be due to a number of reasons. Before you panic that you have wasted your money, here are five simple mistakes that you might be making in the application of our product. 

 

  1. If you have just wiped off your oil following application and notice that it is looking a little patchy, this may be due to the oil not having enough time to bond to the surface. In order to prevent this, leave the oil to soak for approximately 10 minutes. This allows the oil to bond to the fibres of the wood, resulting in a more full coverage effect. 

  2. Another cause of your wooden surface looking patchy or messy could be due to multiple coats. The Rubio Monocoat formula is specifically designed to only need one coat. Therefore, any surplus coats will render the floor patchy and won’t have your desired outcome. 

  3. If your oil isn’t covering the desired surface area, this could be due to one of two reasons. Firstly, we urge all customers to read our online descriptions as they detail the approximate coverage of each product size in m². Secondly, we recommend that the oil is applied with one of our scrubby pads. They don’t absorb the oil like a regular cloth, and they deeply work the oil into the wood fibres, helping it to go further.

  4. If the colour is less vibrant than what you were hoping for, it might be because you haven’t sufficiently mixed your oil. This ensures that the pigments, which may have settled to the bottom of the tin, are properly combined with the other components. You can guarantee that it is well mixed with some of our Rubio Monocoat mixing stirrers.

  5. If the colour isn't applying properly, it might be because there is already a product on the wooden surface. This includes stains, lacquers and varnishes. In order to prevent this, ensure that the surface is raw before application. This entails sanding your surface, and then wiping it down before the application of the oil.
