Why sustainability matters to us

Sustainability is a topic that you hear about frequently in our ever-changing world. Though you might not immediately assume it, Green Tin Oils makes sustainability not just a goal but a priority. Our supplier is a company called Rubio Monocoat, which has sustainability sewn into the very fabric of their production. Therefore, by supporting Green Tin Oils, not only are you choosing the option that will reduce your carbon footprint, but you are also actively helping the environment. By choosing Green Tin Oils, you help our air stay clean, and you can protect your wooden surfaces in a manner that doesn’t degrade our natural environment.

Over the last 10 years, our suppliers, Rubio Monocoat, have achieved a number of certificates towards their endeavour to protect the environment. Most recently, in 2024, they were awarded a ‘Talking Climate Action Site Label’ which was awarded by CO2logic and validated by vinçotte. This certificate proves that they have reduced and offset their carbon footprint every year. Other Certificates include the GreenGuard Gold certificate in 2021 for the Oil Plus 2C’s, which notes them as safe to use in schools and healthcare facilities, and in 2018, they achieved the Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort Gold Label also for Oil Plus 2C. Their dedication to limiting harmful chemicals and sustainability in production can be seen throughout their work, which is done to a high standard to produce quality items.

Our suppliers are dedicated to producing formulas for each product that are non-toxic and have no VOC’s. VOC’s are volatile organic compounds which evaporate into the air at room temperature and are then inhaled, causing a variety of negative side effects. The omission of these chemicals contributes to a cleaner atmosphere and better air quality in the spaces where our products are used. Instead, the formula for their oils is primarily linseed oil, which is non-toxic, plant-based and food safe, which means that it can even be used on your chopping boards or service platters. This strategy is highly unique and helps us to take pride in our product as it doesn’t adversely affect the environment.

As Rubio Monocoat is a Belgian-based company, the carbon emissions caused by shipping directly to customers would be unnecessarily high, which is why alternative approaches have been used. There is a distribution network spanning over 80 countries, and Green Tin Oils is unique as we ship to both the UK and Ireland. What this means is we at Green Tin Oils will buy products in bulk to limit the number of shipments necessary. Then we ship locally to you, with free delivery. This limits long-haul flights and helps to keep our carbon emissions low, which is of the utmost importance to us. Supporting your local distributor helps to limit your environmental impact.

Once you have received our product, you will notice that it is all encased in biodegradable packing. This ranges from the box you receive your purchases in, to the packing paper rather than bubble wrap, and even your product, when empty, is recyclable. This is done in order to minimise wastage as the box and packing paper can be reused, and your empty tins and bottles can be easily recycled. Additionally, the plastic bottles that our cleaning products and smaller oils come in are actively being transitioned to be made of recycled plastic, rather than just recyclable plastic. Therefore, plastic will be recycled upon purchase and after use when you buy from Green Tin Oils, meaning you are actively ameliorating the environment.

All of these factors combined give you an insight into why you should choose Green Tin Oils if you care about our natural environment. Supporting us will help Rubio Monocoat to achieve their goal of Net Zero by 2030 and continue to provide an eco-friendly service in products for enhancing your wooden surfaces.
